JFK Rotterdam


A city in The Netherlands (also revered to as Holland) with Europe's biggest port.

Rotterdam is the second biggest city of the Netherlands.
Amsterdam is approximately a 1 hour drive away from Rotterdam and in between you'll find cities like
Delft, Den Haag (The Hague) and Leiden. In the opposite direction you'll go to Belgium. A city like
Antwerpen is also about 1 hour driving from Rotterdam. If you're in Rotterdam it's easy to
make trips to one of those other cities. This page gives you an impression of Rotterdam and whats there to see.

Central Station The new Central Station. The tip of the roof points to the center of Rotterdam. In the station you will find among others Starbucks and Burger King.
From the Central Station to the left, see the Weena and further on you reach the Hofplein fontain. Rotterdam
Hofplein The Hofplein Fountain. On this picture you see 2 giraffe in front of it for the celebration of the 150 year Rotterdam Zoo. The Zoo is locally known as Diergaarde Blijdorp.
This art is the New Delftse Poort (1993). The original building from 1764 was the only remaining city gate of Rotterdam and it was destroyed by the German bombing of Rotterdam on May 14th 1940. Delftse Poort

This is station Blaak, actually it is the roof of the station because the station is underground. Behind the station is the Market Hall and on Tuesdays and Saturdays there is a large outdoor market here. Railroad Station Blaak
Cube Houses The Cube Houses on the Blaak. One of them (the Kijk-Kubus) can be viewed by paying an entrance fee and there is also a hostel (Stayokay).
This particular area is called The Old Harbor. You'll find a couple of bars in this neighborhood and historic shipyard Koningspoort, where they maintenance and repair historic ships. The Old Harbor
The White House This building was at the time (1898) the highest building in Europe. Rotterdam's first "skyscraper". It's called the White House. One of the few building that survived the bombing of Rotterdam center in World War 2.
The Zadkine statue "The devastated city" This statue represents the bombing of Rotterdam in the Second World War. The hands in the sky against the bombs falling down and a hole in the body to show the center was bombed out of the city. The devastated city
The Hef This high bridge (The Hef) was used by the train. Since the train runs under the ground now, the bridge is no longer in use.
This is the Boompjes with 3 apartments buildings. Here you will find 'Rebus Boat Excursions' to the famous windmills of Kinderdijk. A little further, say under the Erasmus Bridge you will find the Spido. The Spido offers a short harbor cruise. The port of Rotterdam is actually too big for a 75 minute tour. The port reaches all the way to the North Sea, so you need to take a day trip (to the Maasvlakte) to really see the port. Boompjes
Boompjes Next to the north side of the Willemsbrug is the building Willemswerf where Jackie Chan slides down from the roof in the movie "Who Am I". Watch the video on Youtube.
The Erasmus Bridge (The Swan). The Erasmus Bridge has become one of the landmarks of Rotterdam. Erasmus Bridge
Water Taxi This is the Water Taxi. They can bring you to different location along the river, like Delfshaven, Hotel New-York, Steamship SS-Rotterdam, the Euromast, the Veerhaven, the Old Harbor, the Watertower, soccer stadium Feyenoord (The Kuip), restaurant Zalmhuis or just bring you across the river.
The cruise terminal and building 'The Rotterdam' (the vertical city) one of the biggest building of Holland. It includes Hotel Nhow with 285 rooms. Their "Sunset Rooms" have a great view on the bridge, river and Rotterdam center. Cruise Harbour
Holland America Line Here you see what was once the Holland-America-Line building (HAL), today it's a hotel called NewYork. Between 1880 and 1925, emigrants departed from here to America. Retired ocean/cruise liner SS-Rotterdam is now Museum, Hotel and Restaurant. Located on the south side of Rotterdam. Visiting this Steam Ship is one of the things to do in Rotterdam. SS-Rotterdam
Euromast The tower to the left is the Euromast. It has a great view of Rotterdam and a restaurant halfway to the top of the tower. The building next to the tower (on the picture) is the ventilation building of the Maastunnel. There you also find a small building with the entrance to go down to the tunnel and cross the river by foot or bike.
This Flour-Windmill is located in an small historic part of Rotterdam called Delfshaven. Close by you also find the shipyard that makes a reconstruction of historic warship Delft (1782). Flourmill The Distilling Vessel
Pilgrim Fathers Church Also in Delfshaven the Pilgrim Fathers Church. Here the Pilgrim Fathers left with the ship Speedwell for their voyage to North America. Left to the church is brewery and restaurant 'De Pelgrim'. You can make an appointment for a brewery tour.
This is the 'Van Brienenoord Bridge'. When it was still a single bridge it was known for its traffic jams. In 1990 the capacity of the bridge was doubled by putting a second bridge next to it. Brienenoord Bridge
The Prinsen Windmill You'll have to search for them, but you can find a couple of windmills in Rotterdam. (See the map) This picture shows the Prinsenmolen located in the Prinsenpark in Hillegersberg. Close to Rotterdam you'll also find Kinderdijk. There you can see a lot of windmills close together.
On the North border of Rotterdam lays Rotterdam Airport. Local known as Airport Zestienhoven and today the official name is 'Rotterdam The Hague Airport' because the airport is also close to The Hague. The airport has flights to about 40 destinations in Europe. Rotterdam Airport
