Voltage surges induce  high current peaks in the rotor of the electric motor.

This current will also flow in the motor bearings. When these currents are large due to voltage surges, the bearings can be damaged. This effect is known as "pitting"

Below is a picture of a motor bearing with pitting damage.

Runtime of the motor was 1275 hours.
